Learning Blog Log 12/17/14

Today in class ( first block ), we went over our past few days with the TOC's and discussed about whether we were appropriate in class and if the TOC's gave us the correct work and instructions to do. We had also planned out our " commercials" that were going to be filmed during block 2 of today. Our lit circle groups came together as one and we came up with ideas and talked about the pros and cons of our book and planned out how our commercial was going to look like. We came up with ideas that would persuade our audience to "buy" our book.

 Why did we do it?
- We discussed about the past few days with the TOCs to get organised and get up to date. We brainstormed our ideas for the commercial because we had to get off a start and brainstorming and working together as a group would be a great start to making a successful commercial.

Reflections and Connections;
I think that going over and discussing ideas with people will help me outside of humanities because it teaches me that working and expressing my ideas with other people helps me open up to others and hearing about their own ideas makes me reflect on myself and it teaches me that working by myself isn't always the best way to do something.

Homework reminders-
- We can go and film our commercials before school, after, and during lunch as well.
- Paragraphs from booklet are due Friday.

Homework tips
-Check the blog daily, this has helped me a lot and you should do it too.
- Our agendas are there for a reason.

What did we do today?

-Commercials

Why did we do it?

-To convince others to read the book "I Am A Taxi"
-To learn how to make the negative stuff into positive
-To improve our skills of persuasion

How was today's class skill's or subject matter relevant (important) beyond Hum 8?

-It's something we might have to do in order to get something we want
-Because we can't always be negative

Where it might be useful and how?

-When we become a business person to persuade others into buying product
-Persuading others in general to get something you want
-Trying to persuade any sort of stuff like why you should vote for _ and etc.

Learning Blog ( December 16, 2014 )

 Today we did our paragraph booklet, which teach us lots of different type of writing.
-       Narrative Paragraph
-       Descriptive Paragraph
-       Expository Paragraph
-       Persuasive Paragraph

It also teaches us how to write a paragraph. For example, how to write a topic sentence, how to give supporting details and how to write a concluding sentence.

Homework:

Come with ideas for the type of reader for whom your novel would appeal to and reasons why.

Come up with list of at least 10( combined) pros and cons about your novel – be specific and include examples.

Come prepared with an opinion= on a scale of 1-5 stars, how would you rate the novel and would you recommend it? If so – to which target audience(s)

What did we do?

3 words

                                3 words

My name is Ryan and I am a grade 8 student , Ms Lees is my humanities teacher and these are my 3 words .

-       Skill
-       Focus
-       Brave

I chose my first word “skill” because I’m in the basketball team right now. We are going to play against tier 1 which is the better team. It’s going to be hard for us, I don’t want to loose. I don’t want to slow my team down, I want to be able to get points when I suppose to get it.

The second word is “focus”. I chose this word because I want to start focusing on what I’m doing . For example, sometime I lose focus on what I’m doing so I’ll not be able know what we just did.


                The last word I chose is being “brave”. I’m a really shy boy who is scared of lots of things. I want to be brave enough that I’m not scare when I’m doing the wright thing. For instance, there was a time where I’m so shy to ask question that I don’t understand.

Hi, my name is Lily and I am a grade 8 student, currently in Ms Lees class, and these are my 3 words challenge.
  • Friendly
  • Adventurous 
  • Learn
I chose friendly because, me I tend to get bad moods and when I get bad moods, I transfer them to my friends or my work or other things I do daily. This word will help me realize that not only am I beginning to be a jerk to many people but also, not caring about how others think of me or how I think of them. If I live by this word, I will start to control my bad moods therefore, my personality will change, my mind will change, and I'll start thinking about other people's feelings.

I chose adventurous because I think everything is an adventure, when you have something in your life that is exciting, your heart rate beats faster and you are more energized. To my opinion, I love that feeling, adrenaline pumping, it makes you more... Alive. And it really describes what I want to do with my life, I want to be. Adventurous. 

I chose learn because once we do things, I want to learn. Bad mistake or good mistake, I want to learn more from it. I want to achieve it. I want to get it and be able to explain it. Learning is basically what I strongly want to live by because in anything I do, I want to learn from it. The more the experience the more curious I am. Learn makes up all words, honestly. To me, I think in anything you do or any experience you make, there's always something you can improve on or learn from.

Hi im Neil, and im from Ms Lees Hum 8 class. 

The first word that i chose is favorable. In my previous years i have many friends but they dont favor me, they favor their other friends. Im afraid that a small problem can turn into a big one. So i need to improve my social skills. 

The second word is adjuvant. I notice every single time im doing group prodjects, I cant support my peers by working and helping them. 

The final word i chosed is, motivated. Every prodjects i have, im not really passionated about it. Sometimes im off focus and im goofing aroun with my friends. I really need to motivate myself to do what ik suppose to do.

Hi, my name is Chantel and I'm in grade 8 and am part of Ms.Lees Humanities class. The three words I chose were, diligent, positive, and confident

The first word that I chose was diligent. For the past few years, I've found that I'm a high class procrastinator and I really need to improve and not be one. This affects my school work and life, I want to try harder and get better grades. Ever since we had gotten our report cards, I have been mentally motivated to be more diligent and try a lot more than I did last year and not procrastinate as well as get all my work handed in on time.

The second word I chose was positive. I would like to be more positive because this will help me in school and out. This will help me see things in a different perspective. This will also help me out of school because I'll be more positive and happier. Therefore, I think I should be more positive because this will help now and in the future.

The last word I chose was confident. I find that I lack a lot of self confidence, which really brings down my social skills. I think really negative about myself at times and I think that I should stop or at least tone it down a bit and have more confidence in myself. This will also help me in school because I'll be more confident in my own answers and opinions, instead of thinking everyone else is right and I'm the wrong one.

3 Words

Hello, my name is Grace and I am from Ms.Lees humanities class.

The first word that I picked was consume. I want to be able to consume other thoughts and opinions from my classmates and put it into use when I am doing my own work. I also want to consume my teacher's directions or instructions more carefully by listening more intently in class as well. Consuming ideas or thoughts can effect my grades and work habits more and help improve them for my future years.

The second word that I chose was comprehend. The following years, I usually never fully understood what I was taught. I was confused and didn't ask my teacher for help, which led me to hours of confusion and stress. Now, I look forward to less hours spent on my homework by asking the teacher to explain what the homework was or going to flex for help.

The final word that I picked was unique.There are times when everyone's work is very similar and almost identical. At those times, I want my work to be different and separated from theirs. I find that all my work is very mediocre and never outside of the box. I want to be able to step out of my comfort zone and take the extra mile of doing something advanced and creative that I will be proud of. Besides, my finished outcome will be more entertaining for myself to view as well.

Blog Log Decemeber 10th 2014 ( First Block )

What did we do?
- For the majority of the whole class, we marked our " Plot Diagram" retest. After we had finished marking our fellow classmate's work, we moved on to discussing about how the week was going to be planned out. We ended up finishing class with silent reading our Lit Circle novels to be ready for our last Lit Circle discussion on Friday. Some of us had already finished reading our books, therefore had already started their Self Responses
Why did we do it ?
-Well we had to get our test marked, and Ms.Lees would take a longer time to mark it by herself than our whole class doing it, so we marked them to get them handed in faster. We started reading our novels to get a head start on our Lit Circle Self Responses.
Reflections/Connections ( How will this help us outside of Humanities ?)
- This isn't exactly helpful to our life outside of school. I did learn that having a head start on something ( for example reading our novels today) will give us a lesser time to finish our homework and have more time for our lives outside of school.

What did we talked about?-We looked at a video about "What's your sentence?".
-We brainstorm 3 words about our "Forget new years resolution".
Why did we do it?
We looked at the video because we're doing "what's your sentence" for homework and we need to check the video, so we can understand what are we doing. We brainstorm 3 words because we need to post it on our blog and Ms Lees will be sharing it with the author via twitter. Homework

Learning Blogs (December 9, 2014)

What did we do?
- Talk about our Developing Paragraphs
- Descriptive Paragraphs
- Report cards
- Self Evaluation
Why did we do it?
- We talked about our Developing Paragraphs (which was suppose to be due today), because students in Block 1 class did not understand what to do. Therefore, Ms Lees postponed the due date to tomorrow.
- Today we mostly talked about Descriptive Paragraphs. Ms Lees explained how to do our activity (descriptive paragraphs), we underline the Topic Sentence, highlight the descriptive words and transition word phrases (in different colour)
- Today was the day we got our report cards. Ms Lee explained that we will be getting them at the end of class with parent signatures.
- The self evaluation is also going with our report cards, Ms Lees just made us stand up so she could see who handed in their self evaluation and who didn't.
Reflections and connections
- Self Evaluation can help us with any subject. How? Because whenever we self evaluate ourselves, we can see where we need help in.
- Report cards, tells us what we need to improve on, what subject, etc.

Learning Blog ( December 8th, 2014)

Monday, December 8th, we did……

 Lit Circle Discussion
   We have to prepare our Dialectical Journal for Lit Circle. Dialectical Journal is where you have to choose a quote and make connection with you, author or world. We also need to prepare 3 to 5 critical questions instead of “ right there “ question.
While one of the group is discussing, there will be another group observing them to practice their listening skills. We will get our observation sheet back. We self assessed and discuss the group goals and self goals.
   After we finish all of that, we work on our innovation fair proposal.
